Megan's dog Sparky eats 4 1/4 c of food each day. Explain how Megan can determine how much food to give Sparky if she needs to feed him only 2/3 as much. Solve the problem.

(2/3) * (17/4) = 34/12 = 2 10/12 = 2 5/6

2 5/6

the answer is 2 5/6

2 5/6

The answer is 2 5/6

2 5/6

Tornyn T.Z., your wrong. The math term "as much" means you divide. In 4 1/4, multiply the whole number 4 by the denominator which is in this case 4. 4 x 4 = 16, so we get a improper fraction of 16/4. To find the numerator when this mixed number is shown as an improper fraction, use addition. 16/4 + 1/4 is 17/4. Find the inverse of 2/3 by swapping the numerator and denominator to get 3/2. Multiply the numerators and denominators. 17/4 x 3/2 = 51/8. 51 divided by 8 is 6 with the remainder of 3. The remainder is now the numerator, so we get a final answer of 6 3/8.

However, 4 1/4 TIMES 2/3 = 2 5/6. 4 1/4 SUBTRACT 2/3 is 3 7/12. 4 1/4 PLUS 2/3 = 4 11/12. But since it said "as much" we divide, and it seemed that other people didn't pick up those two important words. That is why you shouldn't Google up your problem and reply on the answer most people provide, but instead try to figure it out first if you can.

Im confused on the problem can anyone help me? Im in 5th grade

The answer is 2 5/6 because you have to keep 2/3 the same and then you have to make 4 1/4 an improper fraction and then that give you 34/12. It is another improper fraction so then you make it a mixed number. You would get 2 10/12 because 12 goes into 34 two times with 10 leftover. Then you have to simplify because it can be simplified by 2. So your final answer is 2 5/6

MATH QUESTION: Megan's dog Sparky eats 4 1/4 cups of food each day. Explain how Megan can determine how much food to give Sparky if she needs to feed him only 2/3 as much. Solve the problem. NOTE: Do not follow my answer unless you can't figure out or you understand the risk of cheating. Anyways, ANSWER: 3 7/12. EXPLAIN: If your saying "as much" you subtract. 4 1/4 - 2/3 = 3 7/12. 3 7/12 is your final answer.

You kids should not be looking up your math and do it on your own it will make you way smarter and if you need help just ask your parents or ask a teacher for help.

Why do you always use the reciprocator when you divide fractions, except in this problem? I've always heard the keep, change, flip, method.

17/4 βž—2/3
keep 17/4, change βž—to x, flip 2/3 to 3/2
17/4 x 3/2
This equals 51/8 which is clearly wrong.

Why does this question not follow that rule?

I understand Pika Girl that you are using the term only 2/3 as much. The student should have also explained that the question came from a "Multiplying Mixed Numbers" homework sheet. Every question on there is multiplying. Also, if you apply logic to the question...which I ask my students to do...If Megan is already feeding him 4 1/2 cups of food and she "needs to feed him only 2/3 as much" then you are looking for a smaller number. 6 3/8 cups would give the dog more food. When it says 2/3 as much...it means a portion OF, which tells you to multiply. Those of you that judge the student for looking on the internet....you should be ashamed. 1. At least the student cares enough in 5th grade to seek out help for the answer. 2. I would love to see all of you try to take and pass the test he/she has to take at the end of the year. 3. It is sad that he didn't have one adult at night that he could of asked for some help.
