I have to write a reflection on a photo essay about the Great Depression for English class. It(the reflection) is supposed to explain how the photos show the conditions of the Depression and it is also supposed to relate the photos to the life of the average black male of the time, as well as to the novels, To Kill a Mockingbird and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I suppose I don't really need help with the reflection or the content, but I don't know how to focus enough to work on it. It is supposed to be short: only a page, double spaced. So, again, my real question: How do I attain sufficient focus to finish this?

Ummmm.... Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am already about halfway through it, and I can't seem to get back into it. Being a reflection, it is fairly informal, so I simply describe the photos and then explain their meaning. I just always seem to veer away from the screen in the middle of a sentence and start tapping something or staring into space.

I suggest you come up with a good thesis statement. Then briefly outline your ideas that will support your thesis.

Those two steps should make it easier to focus on your essay.

Finding focus can be difficult, especially when you have a specific task to complete within a given timeframe. Here are a few strategies to help you attain sufficient focus to finish your reflection:

1. Set a clear objective: Start by defining what you want to achieve with your reflection. Understand the purpose and desired outcome of your assignment. This will help you stay focused on the task at hand.

2. Create a schedule: Plan your time effectively by setting aside dedicated blocks for working on your reflection. Break it down into smaller, manageable tasks and allocate specific time slots for each. Having a structured schedule can help you prioritize and stay on track.

3. Minimize distractions: Identify potential distractions in your environment and take steps to minimize them. Put your phone on silent mode or in another room, close unnecessary tabs on your computer, and find a quiet space where you can concentrate without interruptions.

4. Practice time management techniques: Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique can be helpful in managing your time effectively. Set a timer for 25 minutes of focused work, then take a short break before diving back in. This can help you maintain your concentration and prevent burnout.

5. Stay motivated: Find ways to stay motivated and engaged with your assignment. Remind yourself of the importance of completing the reflection and the value it holds for your English class. You can also set small rewards for yourself after achieving specific milestones, such as completing a certain number of paragraphs or reaching a particular point of your reflection.

6. Take care of yourself: Ensure you're in the right physical and mental state to work effectively. Get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks to recharge and avoid fatigue. Taking care of your overall well-being can significantly improve your ability to focus on the task at hand.

Remember, staying focused is a skill that takes practice, so don't be too hard on yourself if you find your attention wavering. Try out different strategies and find what works best for you. Good luck with your reflection!
