can someone at least tell me what I am supposed to write about?? maybe I am not understanding the question or the task..

You need to choose one Eastern philosopher and one Western philosopher. Read some of what each has written. Then tell how each philosopher has attempted to convince people that his ideas are right.

This article should give you some ideas.

I chose John Dewey and Siddhartha Gautomo (Buddha)

Here are lists of Eastern and Western philosophers.

Your assignment asks that you choose one of each and explain how that person tries to convence others that his/her philosophy is correct. I would choose two that have ideas on the same subject and then you can compare and contrast the two and conclude which you think made the best argument.

Why did you choose John Dewey and Sadhartha?

Certainly! In order to write your paper comparing Eastern and Western philosophers, you need to choose two philosophers, one from each tradition. Here are two examples of influential philosophers from each region, along with a brief description of their ideas:

1. Eastern philosopher: Confucius (551-479 BCE) - Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who emphasized the importance of ethical behavior, social harmony, and moral cultivation. His philosophy aimed at creating an ideal society through education and self-improvement. Confucius advocated for the practice of the Five Relationships, which defined proper conduct between various social roles.

2. Western philosopher: Plato (427-347 BCE) - Plato was a Greek philosopher who focused on the nature of reality, knowledge, and the ideal forms. He believed that true knowledge comes from abstract reasoning rather than sensory experience. Plato's famous Allegory of the Cave illustrates his view that the material world is an imperfect reflection of a higher reality, and that true knowledge is obtained through philosophical contemplation.

These are just two examples to get you started. Once you choose your philosophers, you can conduct further research to delve into their specific ideas and arguments. Remember to consider their overall philosophies, key ideas, and their persuasive cases for these ideas when comparing them in your paper.
