The Middle Ages was a period of great religious devotion. Religious observance could be found everywhere. The Church played a key role in everyday life, not only in religious services but also in entertainment. The mystery play was a popular form of entertainment during this time. The focus of mystery plays was real or fictitious events in the lives of saints. At first, these plays were part of religious services. Later, they became popular outside of the Church and were often performed at medieval festivals. Some of the plays focused on Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The Middle Ages is also sometimes called the Age of Faith. Religion shaped almost every aspect of daily life. Roman Catholicism dominated Western Europe.
You have already learned that monasteries and convents were places of prayer and meditation. By the 1200s, monasteries played an even greater role in society. These institutions owned land and were agricultural centers. Those located in towns also provided education and other services to the people.
Other forms of Christian community developed during the 1200s. The mendicant orders were groups of religious people or monks who preached to ordinary people and chose a life of poverty. One of these orders was founded by St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis founded the Franciscan order. Following his lead, Clare of Assisi founded an order that spread through Italy and the rest of Europe.Religion and Education in Medieval Culture

As you read in the Getting Started slide, the Church heavily influenced drama during the Middle Ages. It also shaped other art forms. Architecture was heavily influenced by the Church. Gothic cathedrals towered over the towns of Western Europe, first in France and then in the rest of Europe. Many of these massive and elaborate structures still stand today.
The Church also shaped social conduct, particularly when it came to the code of chivalry. Instead of bravery and loyalty to the king, the Church emphasized generosity, humility, and mercy.
Another area of influence was in education. The Church supported the growth of learning. Initially, schools were set up to train students for priesthood. Eventually, these schools grew into universities that taught other subjects. Universities are schools, or groups of schools, that train scholars at the highest levels. The universities attracted great scholars such as Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas believed in natural law. Natural law is the belief that humans have certain rights by nature. For example, killing another person violates not only human-made law but also natural law.
