To identify the line that best develops Walter Mitty's character, we need to analyze each option and see which one provides the most significant insight into his personality, mindset, or behavior.

a. "You're not a young man any longer."
This line indicates that Walter Mitty is not as young as he used to be, but it does not necessarily give us deeper insight into his character.

b. "The Old Man'll get us through.' they said to one another"
This line shows that Walter Mitty and others have confidence in someone referred to as "The Old Man." While it may suggest dependency or lack of autonomy, it does not provide much insight into Walter's unique character traits.

c. "They're so d--n cocky, thought Walter Mitty, walking along Main Street; they think they know everything."
This line gives us a glimpse into Walter Mitty's thoughts and how he perceives others. It suggests that he views some people as overly confident and arrogant. This statement reflects his tendency to observe and judge others, implying a more critical or skeptical aspect to his character.

d. "Then, with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, the inscrutable to the last."
This line presents a vivid image of Walter Mitty's daydreaming activities. It implies that he finds an escape from his mundane life by imagining himself in heroic or exciting situations, such as facing a firing squad. This suggests that Walter Mitty has a rich inner world and a sense of pride or defiance.

Considering these options, line d is the strongest choice as it not only showcases Walter Mitty's vivid imagination but also reveals his underlying character traits of pride, defiance, and escapism.

To find this answer, one must carefully read and analyze the given lines, paying attention to the details provided about Walter Mitty's thoughts, behaviors, and emotions.
