  12. The Church discouraged the laity from reading. When the Bible was translated into the vernacular instead of only Latin, the Church objected. The hierarchy did NOT want the laity to read ANYTHING (much less the holy book) for themselves. They were to rely on the priesthood to tell them what to think.
