Question #1: Which of the following answer choices contains a metaphor?

a. His skin was sandpaper
b. The sun sparkled like a diamond
c. She wanted to be like the birds abd fly away
d. They felt free when they ran though the doors

According to my study a metaphor describes one thing as if it were something else.

Answer B and C are incorrect because they contain a simile, that uses the word like or as to compare two seemingly unlike things.

I'm just stuck between A and D.

Read the following lines from the poem "The Destruction of Sennacherib" by Lord Byron.

The Assyr came down like a wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold.
And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea,
When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.

Question #2: What is the rhyme scheme of the above lines?

a. abab
b. aabb
c. aabc
d. abaa

According to what I have studied some poems also contain rhyme, or the repetition of vowel and consonant sounds at the ends of words, as in tin and pin. In many poems, the rhymes follow a particular patter, or rhyme scheme. Lines 1 and 2 follow a particular pattern from what I understand, but then I'm stuck.

Question #3: What is a key characteristic of a refrain in poetry?

a. imagery
b. alliteration
c. repetition
d. rhyme

According to what I have studied like a catchy song, a poem may repeat lines, either identically or with variations. A line or group of lines that is repeated at regular intervals in a poem is called a refrain. In a refrain, a poet reminds readers and listeners of a key idea, image, or event. Often, a refrain is repeated at the end of each stanza. A poet may also repeat lines with variations, that's changing one or more words with each repetition.

So I think the answer is C.

Question #4: Which statement describes the traditional form of a haiku poem?

a. a three-line poem with seven syllables in the first and third lines and five syllables in the middle line
b. a nine-line poem with five syllables in odd-numbered lines and seven syllables in even-numbered lines
c. a poem of varying length in which all of the lines have at least five syllables and every other line ends in a rhyme
d. a three-line poem with five syllables in the forst and third lines and seven syllables in the middle line

According to what I have studied a haiku is a three-line Japanese form that describes something in nature. The first and third lines each have five syllables, and the second line has seven. So I think the answer is D.

  14. Don't criticize Reed. He is exactly correct. However, if you didn't read and think about your answers then you would have missed questions if you answered them aabb. aabb is the correct answer to question #2, not the answers to the entire quick check. He's a great tutor, if you are trying to learn. If you just want to get the answers, perhaps you should use someone else who will let you copy.
