I have two questions:

The temperature changed from 7ºF at 6 P.M. to -5ºF at midnight. What was the difference between the high and low temperatures? What was the average change in temperature per hour? The difference between the temperatures is 12ºF because 7 - (-5) = 7 + 5 = 12.
What I need help with is the average change in temperature per hour, I don't understand what it's asking for or how to do it, is it asking for the mean between the temperatures ? Please show work and explain.

Second question: At 11,560 feet above sea level, Climax, Colorado, is the highest town in the United States. The lowest is Calipatria, California, at 185 feet below sea level. How much closer to sea level is the town that is closer?
How do I show which is closer ? I forgot how to show absolute value if that's what it's asking for. Thanks~

For the first question, to find the average change in temperature per hour, you need to calculate the total change in temperature and then divide it by the number of hours. The total change in temperature is determined by subtracting the initial temperature from the final temperature.

In this case, the initial temperature at 6 P.M. is 7ºF and the final temperature at midnight is -5ºF. So the total change would be -5 - 7 = -12ºF.

To calculate the number of hours between 6 P.M. and midnight, you subtract the starting time from the ending time. Since there are 6 hours between 6 P.M. and midnight, you would divide the total change in temperature (-12ºF) by 6 hours to get the average change in temperature per hour: -12 / 6 = -2ºF.

So the average change in temperature per hour is -2ºF.

For the second question, to determine which town is closer to sea level, you need to compare their distances from sea level. Climax, Colorado is at 11,560 feet above sea level, and Calipatria, California is at 185 feet below sea level.

To find the difference, you can subtract the elevation of Calipatria from the elevation of Climax: 11,560 - (-185) = 11,560 + 185 = 11,745 feet.

The town that is closer to sea level is the one with the smaller absolute value. In this case, since Calipatria is below sea level, it is closer to sea level than Climax, Colorado.

To show absolute value, you would use vertical bars or parentheses. In this case, the absolute value of -185 is |-185| or (-185). This represents the distance from sea level, regardless of whether it is above or below.

So Calipatria, California is 11,745 feet closer to sea level than Climax, Colorado.

1. The temperature dropped 12 degrees in 6 hours. Divide 12 by 6 to find the average hourly change.

2. Subtract 185 from 11,560.
