    let Max's speed be x mph

    Carter's distance = 150 miles
    Max's distance = 2.5x

    .60(150+2.5x) = 150
    90 + 1.5x = 150
    1.5x = 60
    x = 40

    a) distance between towns = 150 + 2.5(40)
    = 250 miles
